South Wilts Archery Club is based in Salisbury and covers South Wiltshire and the surrounding area. It is one of the oldest clubs in the country having been founded in 

1859 and offers target, field, clout and wand archery. We have approximately 200 members shooting a range of bow styles from the high-tech Compound to the traditional English Longbow.

Beginners



Q When will dates for the next beginners courses be released?
A Course dates are arranged at the beginning of the year and advertised on our Facebook page from Mid-February. https://www.facebook.com/SouthWiltsArcheryClub/

Q How many courses do you run?
A We run between three and four beginners courses each year. A course will be run over four sessions each lasting 2.5 hours (total 10 hours)

Q Can juniors attend a beginners course?
A Juniors must be a minimum of 11 to attend the course. All juniors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian until 18 so we encourage that a parent/guardian attend the course too. We may on occasion run adult only courses which will be more intensive.

Q I’m interested in attending a course but can’t see one advertised can I be added to a waiting list?
A We don’t run a waiting list, please check our Facebook page regularly for course details.

Q Is archery an accessible sport.
A Yes it is but suggest that if you have special requirements that you contact the Head Coach first to discuss before signing up to the course, this will allow us to ensure we have the correct equipment for your needs.

Q How much is the course?
A 2025 course cost - £80 per person

Q Do I need any equipment
A All equipment for the beginners course will be provided by the club. We use Recurve beginners’ bows in both left and right hand.

Q When should I buy my own equipment?
A We recommend that you don’t buy any equipment until you have completed the course. In the last session we will cover equipment and where to buy from.

Q What type of archery is covered in the beginners course?
A We use recurve bows and instruct how to shoot ‘Barebow’ (without sights) and ‘Olympic Recurve’ (with sights).

Q Where are the beginners courses held?
A We run the beginners courses at Trafalgar School, Downton.

South Wilts Archery Club (SWAC) beginners’ course is designed to teach the basic styles of recurve archery to those keen to try the sport. All equipment is supplied for the course


Course structure - The courses are structured over four 2:30-hour sessions covering safety, equipment assembly and shooting techniques. 


Session 1 - Safety, equipment, shooting barebow (without sights)

Session 2 - Refinement of technique and accuracy.

Session 3 - Introduction to shooting a bow with sights

Session 4 - Shooting the style of your choice and a guide to buying equipment


Instruction - The instruction is provided by Archery GB and NFAS coaches and club instructors all experienced archers in their own right and in many different archery disciplines


Venue - Trafalgar School, Downton.
